A fresh coat of paint for the Flatcar docs

The Flatcar docs at www.flatcar.org/docs/latest just went through their biggest structural change since the project’s early days. On top of that, www.flatcar.org/releases has been rebuilt from scratch. This post is a quick tour of what moved, why, and how to tell us when we got something wrong.

Why we did it

The old structure had grown organically over the years. Content was split across installing/, setup/, provisioning/, container-runtimes/, reference/, and a handful of other historical buckets, and the boundaries between them had blurred. New users landing on the docs had to guess where to look, and even experienced users were leaning on the search box or muscle memory to get around.

Summer 2023 - My internship experience

In this blog post, I’ll talk about my enriching internship experience with the Flatcar team. I’ll give you some insight into what I worked on, what I learnt and some of the highlights of my experience.

My work

I interned with the Flatcar team for 2 months from June 5th till July 25th 2023.

The SparkNotes version: we’re a community driven, fully open source, minimal, secure by default and always up-to-date container host Linux distribution. It doesn’t feature a package manager (no apt!), and all OS components reside in a protected read-only partition. The build system for the OS takes after CoreOS’ build system which itself is derived from ChromeOS.

About the handling of embargoed security issues

TL; DR: Flatcar is safe against recent OpenSSL vulnerabilities

With the recent OpenSSL vulnerabilities CVE-2022-3786 and CVE-2022-3602 , the Flatcar team has provided as soon as possible a batch of releases for impacted Flatcar channels (all except LTS which is not impacted). Releases have been published within one hour after the official public announcement and users were able to secure their workloads almost immediately without unexpected turbulences as the releases included only minimal changes to address the security issues.

FrOSCon 2022 - Summary of an Open-Source week-end with some Flatcar team members

FrOSCon took place this year from 20 to 21 August 2022, a two-day event about Free Software and Open Source in Sankt-Augustin, Germany. FrOSCon has something very unique as a conference: it’s almost a large family. One reason is that for many attendees it has become a tradition to go there, building friendships, over 10 years or more. On top of that, it was the first FrOSCon after two years of the event being cancelled or remote-only.

We recently asked the Flatcar user community to share their experiences deploying Flatcar Container Linux. We promised to share the results back with the community, and so here are the top 7 take-aways from the survey:

#1 Kubernetes is deployed on more than 4 out of 5 Flatcar deployments

No surprise here, since Flatcar is designed for containers and Kubernetes is the most popular container orchestration system, 82% of Flatcar users reported that they ran Kubernetes.
